DAY 1 of DAMAGED CITY FEST: Review by FOREIGN SUBSTANCES

“Ian McKaye was baptized here,” said Positive Force organizer Mark Anderson to a crowd of hundreds of hardcore fans gathered at St. Stephen’s Church in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The throng was assembled to enjoy the music and culture that the Minor Threat frontman helped generate more than thirty years ago.
Washington, D.C.’s Damaged City Fest focused on straight-up hardcore this year. The lineup, while less diverse than last year’s, provided a cross-section of pioneering and contemporary fast, heavy, and sometimes political music.

PRESENTING: PENTAGRAM
Going to see Pentagram tonight at AU Spiritual Center. I’m quite excited.
Last time they played in DC, Liebling OD’d and was unable to perform. I think this time will be different. There’s really no way to know unless I venture into the Spiritual Center, where I will pay for all my sins.

The name says it all.
Above, I present some casual historical reading for tonight.
“ Incoherent messages and ritualism indicated that only in death could supreme ecstasy be found; and the nearest thing to it was defined as love.”

Cherry nap and the Giggleyum bar

I fought my way through DC with friends to get to the cherry blossoms. Awesome.

Later on, I took a nap and missed the Priests set, and dillydallied in DC and missed Give. Two bands I was hoping to see. Bummed, but what can I do.

This weekend has been fun. I also wrote a review of bands that played on Friday night, when I was still fresh and not running on too few hours of sleep.
